Practice History

practice-history.jpgGrey Lynn Dental has a proud family history – from father to daughter. It was established by Dr Dhiru Narshai in 1970 and changed ownership to his daughter, Usha, in 1997 on his retirement. Both graduated from Otago University Dental School. However, in Dhiru’s 1967 graduating year, there were no females. In contrast to this, in Usha’s 1991 graduating year, 60% of the class was female. Over the years, many changes have taken place within dentistry. When Dhiru started practising, extracting teeth and denture construction were daily procedures. Usha’s daily dental procedures involve prevention of disease and maintenance of teeth for life. Advances in dental technology has enabled many different ways to look after and treat teeth and gums.

When the practice was first established, Grey Lynn was mainly inhabited by extended families of Pacific Island origin. This is where many island families chose to stay when they first immigrated to New Zealand. The area was once dominated by big factories, like Feltex Carpet and Sleepyhead. There used to be a picture theatre, hardware store, postshop and a Europa Petrol Station.

How ironic that Motat is just down the road from the practice displaying machines and technologies from yesteryear!

Much has changed over the years and Grey Lynn has become a trendy inner-city suburb just a stone’s throw away from the city centre. It is in demand from many young professionals and families as a commuter suburb and a great place to raise a family with schools and parks nearby.

There is a strong community network among Grey Lynnites who have varied social and economic backgrounds. It is a place where you can freely express your individual identity and beliefs as well as neo-hippies and gay population, Grey Lynn is where many of the artistically inclined and media types like to live. The tree-lined streets have historical heritage villas and bungalows, many of which have undergone authentic renovations to preserve their original character.

In 2005, the villa which houses Grey Lynn Dental underwent a full architectural renovation. Much effort went into retaining its original character and charm. We are proud to invite you to our boutique practice where we strive to offer dental excellence and uncompromising service at all times.

Let’s create historic moments together!
